Well then you need to bring more than a table and chairs into the equation. These days, almost everyone is looking to have more than just a traditional patio set in their backyard. The first thing you are going to need to do to have an outdoor cooking area is to have some source of heat for cooking on. There are two ways to go with it. The first option is to purchase a grill, of which there are many options on the market. The second option is to go with something more permanent in structure. You can actually have a complete cooking area, with stovetop for grills built-in. It is built into your patio in some way, shape or form. Some of these even have all of the other kitchen items you might need including sinks, refrigerators, etc. that are built in.

Another thing needed is somewhere to keep food cold until it's ready to be cooked or served. For this you're going to want a refrigerator or some sort of cooling device. If you're starting off simple, a cooler may do. But when you're looking to make this a permanent cooking area in your backyard, you're going to want to take the time and money to install some sort of refrigeration unit. For meats and other items you're going to cook, this will keep them nice and cool until they're ready to go on the fire, and help you avoid anyone getting sick. The same holds true for those potato salads, macaroni salads and other foods that need to stay chilled until serving time comes around.
A Prep Spot
While it would be nice if we never needed any prep work to do to be able to start cooking, that's not the case. So you are going to need some counter space, or even an island, in which to do it. If you're doing a completely built in unit for your patio cooking area, you can have extra counter space or an island built in as well. If you're doing individual pieces to make this work, such as a grill and a small refrigerator tucked under a shelving unit, you're going to want to look for appropriate table options to use as a preparation area for the food you're going to make.
A Wet Spot
The final thing most people want in their outdoor entertaining area is some sort of place to serve up drinks. This is an easy one. There are so many bars on the market for outdoor entertaining areas that your problem may be deciding on which one you want of all the options out there. Just remember to consider how many people you'll be serving on a regular basis and make sure that the bar can handle holding all the supplies that you need to be able to serve in that capacity.
