There are as many types of shelving units as there are items to put on the shelves. They can be purchased for any room of a house, including closets and even outdoor shelving. Many can be purchased at affordable prices and there are some that would surprise most people with the price.
Shelves can be made out of almost anything. Glass, plastic, wood, metal and pressed wood are just a few of the options available. Many times the choice of which type of to buy is based on where the shelves will be placed. Shelves that will be seen by others are usually more decorative while shelving that is for storage can be very standard without any decoration.
Glass Shelving Unit
They can be purchased one shelf at a time or as a complete unit. Some shelving that is placed directly on the wall will use brackets to hold the them steady. Brackets also come in many different sizes, styles and materials. If shelving is needed for the inside of closets or is to be hung on doors then complete units are typically the most popular choice.

Closet Storage - These units are typically made to be customized to each individual's closet size and preferences. Closet shelving is usually made of plastic, wire or wood.
Pallet - This type of shelving is usually found in a warehouse or factory and can hold as much as 6,000 pounds.
Wall - These shelves are one of the most used units in homes. People use these shelves to hold books, display items, and they are very useful in offices for holding equipment.
Industrial Wire and Adjustable Wire - These two types of shelving can be seen in department and grocery stores. The main difference between the two of them is that the industrial shelving is not adjustable. Both units are strong, yet clean and professional in appearance.
Steel Shelving - Steel can be found in both homes and businesses. In homes they can typically be seen in the garage or laundry room and in businesses they may be found in supply rooms.
Heavy Duty Shelving - These can be compared to pallet shelving in that they can hold a lot of weight but they usually have a more professional look which allows them to be used in many more places, including in the home.
Garage Wall - This type allows an individual to store many items in small space while still allowing for room to work. These units have hooks for hanging tools and parts that can be adjusted along the unit. These units are even strong enough to hang bikes and other sporting equipment.
Because shelving units can come in so many different styles, sizes and materials their uses are virtually limitless. If a shelving design can be imagined it can probably be built.
